Merkator supports innovative network operators with application development, analysis and architecture. This unit is under “Geo Utility – Professional Services” which makes the focus clear: Merkator supports the utility sector with Geospatial/GIS.

Utility companies are managing networks: telecommunications, gas, electricity, water, sewer, etc. 75% of Belgian network operators are Merkator’s customers. Think of companies such as Proximus, Fluxys, Fluvius, Telenet, Ores,…

Geo Utility – Professional Services typically works in medium-sized mixed teams. They are made up of colleagues from Merkator and experts from the customer itself. Our specialty is the support of GIS technologies: ESRI, Open-Source, Hexagon, etc. So quite varied.

A group of 35 experts with a great passion for better networks and related geospatial things.

Job Description

Our customers’ technological stack is modular and diversified: an interesting combination of ESRI, FME, Oracle, PostGreSql… is put in place to translate customer needs into business applications. The goal is clear: support critical business applications, create more efficiency and better insights.

Modular technology comes with interesting but also complex challenges. Different software providers have their own agenda, customer expectations change and new needs and requirements arise, …

As a GIS engineer, you master this technology, you manage the existing architecture and the requirements to implement new ones. You thrive in Business & IT challenges. You get in touch with many stakeholders and you discover the possibilities, opportunities and implications of new technologies.

In addition, the market is changing. The transition, for example, to decentralized generation, fiber deployment, 5G and hydrogen poses multiple challenges for existing GIS platforms.

As a GIS Engineer you are not alone: Merkator organizes monthly SKILLS-teams around the different technologies. Knowledge is accumulated and actively shared, so that everyone learns and can uplift our customers to the next level.

Your profile

You are analytical and independent, and you communicate with ease.
You are critical and constructive: you provide high quality work, you ask for help when needed and you help your client by making suggestions for simplification and improvement.
You are able to define, design and prototype new applications.
You have knowledge of ESRI, FME, Oracle, … and/or Open Source solutions. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Server hold no secrets for you.
You want to learn: you may not have experience with all the products, but you want to evolve.
You think about the architecture of your solution.
You can understand the different GIS products and technologies and translate them into a migration or upgrade process at the customer. You create clarity in the chaos of compatibility and interfaces issues.
You score BONUS points with knowledge of ArcGIS Portal, ArcGIS Online, Geocortex or any other GIS software.
You score BONUS points with scripting skills essential to manage an enterprise database and the common data models (CIM, PODS, UPDM, ESRI Utility Network).
You can also score BONUS points with domain expertise: we have customers in Telecoms, Electricity & Gas Distribution and Transport, Water and Wastewater, etc.
